WHAT THEY SAID
&
WHAT THEY MEANT

We all have met people that say one thing and mean another. Many well-known people have spoken out on various topics. We have listed some quotes and what we believe was actually meant.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"I am a progressive who gets things done,"
- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
I get things done by being a moderate.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"Bernie has been here for 25 years. Lots and lots of people in Congress know Bernie well. We like Bernie, we admire Bernie. But of the almost 200 members of Congress who are Democrats, I think two of them have endorsed Bernie Sanders,"
- Clinton supporter Sen. Claire McClaskill (D-Mo.), on Bernie Sanders presidential campaign against Hillary Clinton.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
The Democratic establishment is entirely behind Hillary!

WHAT THEY SAID,
"A hell of a lot worse than waterboarding."
- Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, on his support for waterboarding as a form of interrogation.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
I would turn screws into the terrorists' temples and if they still didn't talk I would chop off their heads and put them on sticks at the White House front gate. They are not going to mess with me because they are losers and I will make America great again.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"When you’re young, you’re thinking, ‘Where are the boys? The boys are with Bernie."
- Feminist Gloria Steinem, on why more young women support Bernie Sanders instead of her candidate Hillary Clinton.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Young women are stupid and only look for sex.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"We don't want that crap."
- Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, on the “Berniebro” group of online supporters that use sexist trash talk against Hillary Clinton supporters.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
We want it without the sexism.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"A vote in 2002 is not a plan to defeat ISIS. We have to look at the threats that we face right now and we have to be prepared to take them on and defeat them."
- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Bernie Sanders vote against authorizing the Iraq War in 2002.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
I have a plan to defeat ISIS while Bernie is stuck on his vote that would never have allowed ISIS to start. Sure I should have listened to Bernie in 2002 but I didn't and now I am trying to solve the problem I helped create.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"Every step along the way, I have stood up and fought and have the scars to prove it,"
- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, on the many years of bickering with Republicans.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Most of my scars are self-inflicted, the others are from Bill.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"I think the whole race changed last night."
- Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie, on his debate performance tearing down robotic Marco Rubio.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
I hope the whole race changed last night, if it didn't I'm done.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other."
- Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, on women who don't support Hillary Clinton for president.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
To hell with you if you don't vote for Hillary Clinton.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"I don't believe in free college."
- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
I believe in student debt, both the government and the banks need the income.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"After last night's debate, 'Oh, you said the same [thing] three or four times.' I'm going to say it again. The reason these things are in trouble is because Barack Obama is the first president, at least in my lifetime, that wants to change the country. Change the country! Not fix it, not fix its problems,"
- Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio, on what he says to people who mention his being outed by rival Chris Christie for robotically repeating the same scripted phrase on Obama over and over again.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
I'm going to say it again because that is all my handlers have taught me to say.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"But if we're going to go into labels, I don't think it was particularly progressive to vote against the Brady Bill five times. I don't think it was progressive to vote to give gun makers and sellers immunity. I don't think it was progressive to vote against Ted Kennedy's immigration reform. We can go back and forth like this, but the fact is, most people watching tonight want to know what we've done and what we will do."
-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, on Bernie Sanders' record.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Bernie Sanders isn't as progressive as he claims.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"I'll look into it. I don't know the status."
- Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on whether she would release the transcripts from her paid speeches to Goldman Sachs and others.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Only after they have been redacted.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"I don’t think voters are interested in the transcripts of her speeches."
- Hillary Clinton adviser Joel Benenson, on whether she would release transcripts of her transcripts from her paid speeches to Goldman Sachs and others.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
I don’t think Hillary Clinton is interested in releasing the transcripts of her speeches.

- Director of the University of New Hampshire Survey Center Andrew Smith, on Hillary Clinton.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Hillary Clinton is the establishment.
