WHAT THEY SAID
&
WHAT THEY MEANT

We all have met people that say one thing and mean another. Many well-known people have spoken out on various topics. We have listed some quotes and what we believe was actually meant.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"Iím not going to this inauguration. I canít go to this inauguration because he continues to spew hatred, bigotry and prejudice even after he said he was going to bring us all together, he was going to unify, but heís not,"
- Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez, on President-elect Donald J. Trump.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
The only way Donald Trump could unify us and bring us Democrats & Republicans together was if he lost.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"If providing a platform for white supremacists makes me a brilliant strategist, a brilliant tactician, I am glad to have lost."
- Hillary Clinton campaign communications director Jennifer Palmieri, on Donald Trump's campaign manager Steve Bannon.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Everyone that voted for Donald Trump is a racist. Steve Bannon is a racist. Kellyanne Conway is a racist. Donald Trump is a racist. You are all a bunch of deplorables. I am happy to be a loser.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"Stop the debate: Time for women to drive."
- Saudi Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, in a Tweet.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
There are plenty of other things women are still not allowed to do, letting women drive makes us look progressive.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"I understand if you donít like Hillary. I get that. I totally get it, but forget about if you like her or not. Look at what sheís done. Then you need to get behind that woman whether you ... like her or not. You get behind somebody thatís done the job versus some guy whoÖ I mean I canít even discuss him in real terms. Heís not a real person. He takes advantage of everyone around him."
- TV personality Chelsea Handler, on women not voting for Hillary Clinton.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
I understand if you donít like Hillary. I get that. I don't get how you wouldn't vote for her even if you don't like her.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"We don't need white people leading the Democratic Party right now,"
- Symone Sanders, a former Bernie Sanders spokeswoman speaking to CNN, on who should run the Democratic Party.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
If we wanted white people running things we would join those deplorable racists that voted for Donald Trump.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"This pipeline is new steel pipe... Itís thick wall pipe, extra thick, by the way, more so than just the normal pipe that we lay... thereís automated valves that, if in the very, very unlikely situation there were to be a leak, our control room shuts down the pipe, encapsulates that small section that could be in peril. So, thatís thatís just not going to happen. Number one, weíre not going to have a leak."
- Energy Transfer Partners CEO Kelcy Warren speaking to PBS, on the oil pipeline they are building in North Dakota.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Weíre not going to have a leak near Bismarck's drinking water only near the Indians' drinking water. That is why we moved it from outside of Bismarck.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"Itís not obstruction, itís not partisan, itís just a duty to find out what theyíd do in these jobs."
- Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown, on delaying the confirmation process for President-elect Trump's Cabinet picks.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Itís obstruction and partisan.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"After serious discussions with the Trump transition team, I feel that I can make a significant contribution particularly to making our inner cities great for everyone."
- Dr. Ben Carson, on being nominated for secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
After serious discussions with the Trump transition team, I realized I have nothing better to do.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"Mr. Trump said during the campaign he would support working-class Americans, but his appointments make it clear he intends nothing of the sort."
- Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings on President-elect Trump's Cabinet appointments.
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Only Democratic Party members support working-class Americans, his appointments make it clear he isn't a Democrat.

WHAT THEY SAID,
"Updated reports say attacker used a vehicle & knife. Horrifying & senseless. Relieved the scene is secure & praying for victims' recovery."
- Senator Tim Kaine in a tweet after tweeting, "Deeply saddened by the senseless act of gun violence at Ohio State this morning. Praying for the injured and the entire Buckeye community."
WHAT THEY MEANT,
Oops!
